Start Your Yo-Yo Journey

Everything you need to know to get started with modern yo-yoing. From picking your first throw to landing your first trick.

    1. Choosing Your First Yo-Yo

    Responsive Yo-Yos

The best place to start. A responsive yo-yo returns to your hand with a simple tug of the string.

    • Easy to learn basic throws
    • Low maintenance
    • Perfect for beginners

    Unresponsive Yo-Yos

For advanced tricks. These yo-yos stay spinning at the bottom of the string and require a "bind" trick to return.

    • Longer spin times
    • Required for complex string tricks
    • Steeper learning curve

    2. The Basics

    Holding the Yo-Yo

Place your middle finger through the slipknot. The string should go over the top of the yo-yo as you hold it in your palm.

    The Throw

Make a muscle with your arm, then extend it straight out while releasing the yo-yo. Turn your hand over to catch it.

    Winding the String

Hold the yo-yo with one hand and wind the string with the other. Keep tension on the first few wraps to prevent it from slipping.

    3. Your First Tricks

Once you're comfortable throwing and catching, try these fundamental tricks. They form the building blocks for everything else.

A fundamental yoyo trick that involves rotating the yoyo around the user's body.

Let the spinning yoyo roll across the floor like a walking dog.

A basic trick where the yoyo spins at the end of the string.

    4. Essential Maintenance

    String Tension

As you play, the string will naturally twist and tighten (or loosen). To fix this, let the yo-yo hang freely at the bottom of the string until it stops spinning.

    Changing the String

Strings wear out! If it looks frayed or dirty, it's time for a new one. Always keep spare strings handy.
